Detention centre escape raises security questions

According to Immigration officials, the escapees - nine men and two women - used bedding material to jump the fence surrounding the facility, which is located on Fairbanks Road.

Chief Immigration Officer Franz Manderson explained that after about four hours into the search, the Cubans were spotted walking through a swampy patch near the rugby pitch in South Sound and apprehended without incident.

“We were informed very early this morning [28 July] that Cubans were missing from the Immigration Detention Centre. We followed our standard procedures in terms of getting a search party mobilised and we were able to locate the Cubans who were in a swampy area in South Sound,” he said.

The Cubans were returned to the detention centre
